Severe Vulnerability Alert: CVE-2026-33824 – Actively Exploited Critical RCE in Windows IKE Extension

A critical security vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2026-33824, is currently under active exploitation by sophisticated threat actors. This flaw, which carries a near-maximum CVSS score of 9.8, resides in the Windows Internet Key Exchange (IKE) and Authenticated IP (AuthIP) IPsec Keying Modules (IKEEXT). What is CVE-2026-33824?

CVE-2026-33824 is a “double-free” memory corruption vulnerability (CWE-415) located within the ikeext.dll library. The vulnerability is triggered during the reassembly of fragmented IKEv2 messages. When a series of specially crafted IKE_AUTH payloads are sent to a vulnerable system, a heap-allocated pointer is incorrectly handled, leading to the same memory block being freed twice.

This memory mismanagement allows an unauthenticated, remote attacker to execute arbitrary code with SYSTEM-level privileges on the target host. Because the vulnerability occurs before any authentication takes place, it is classified as a pre-authentication remote code execution (RCE) flaw, making it exceptionally dangerous for any Windows machine exposed to the internet with IPsec-based VPN services enabled.

Affected Systems and Software

The reach of this vulnerability is extensive, affecting nearly all modern versions of the Windows operating system. Security researchers have confirmed that the following versions are vulnerable:

  • Windows 11: Versions 26H1, 25H2, 24H2, and 23H2
  • Windows 10: Versions 22H2, 21H2, 1809, and 1607
  • Windows Server: Versions 2025, 2022, 2019, and 2016

Organizations should note that internet-facing servers, such as those acting as VPN gateways or domain controllers, are at significantly higher risk than internal workstations.

A remote attacker who successfully exploits this vulnerability can achieve full control over the compromised system. 2. Disable Vulnerable Services

If your organization does not require IPsec VPN or AuthIP functionality, the safest course of action is to disable the IKEEXT service entirely. This can be done via the Services console or by running the following commands in an elevated prompt:

3. Network Filtering

Restrict access to UDP ports 500 (IKE) and 4500 (IKE NAT-T). If remote access is necessary, implement firewall rules to allow traffic only from known, trusted IP addresses. At the network perimeter, block all unsolicited inbound traffic on these ports where possible.

4. Monitoring and Analysis

Security teams should monitor network logs for unusual UDP 500/4500 traffic patterns and check system event logs for unexpected IKEEXT service crashes or restarts. Use Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) tools to alert on suspicious child processes spawning from svchost.exe, which may indicate a transition from a memory crash to active code execution.
